|A fascinating, thought-provoking, hilarious, and sometimes harrowing account of current work culture.|---Gretchen Rubin, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Happiness Project Why do so many people hate their jobs? Lab Rats is a groundbreaking, examination of how the half-baked ideas of Silicon Valley and its |new oligarchs| have changed the way we work, damaged our brains, and left us poorer and insecure. After publishing Disrupted, his bestselling memoir of his disastrous experience working for a young tech company, Dan Lyons watched, astonished, as hundreds of readers wrote to him with their own harrowing stories of discrimination on the job, fear-mongering managers, and companies denigrating employees in pursuit of quick profit. The problems he had identified in the start-up world, Lyons realized, are infecting virtually every kind of job in America--at a time when companies are giving more lip service than ever about happy employees. What happened to work? Who is responsible? And does any company have a model for doing it right? As Lyons ventured across America in pursuit of answers, he came to identify |Four Factors,| a series of ideas that have broken the social contract that once existed between companies and their employees. These new, often dystopian notions about work have made millions subject to constant change, dehumanizing technologies, and even health risks. A few companies, however, get it right. With Lab Rats, Lyons makes a passionate plea for business leaders to understand this dangerous transformation and offers a way out--|an approach to work and business that puts people first, profitably serves customers, and makes the world a little bit better in the process| (Tom Peters, New York Times bestselling author of In Search of Excellence).

|This book focuses on the importance of ideological and institutional factors in the rapid development of the British economy during the years between the Glorious Revolution and the Crystal Palace Exhibition. Joel Mokyr shows that we cannot understand the Industrial Revolution without recognizing the importance of the intellectual sea changes of Britain's Age of Enlightenment. In a vigorous discussion, Mokyr goes beyond the standard explanations that credit geographical factors, the role of markets, politics, and society to show that the beginnings of modern economic growth in Britain depended a great deal on what key players knew and believed, and how those beliefs affected their economic behavior. He argues that Britain led the rest of Europe into the Industrial Revolution because it was there that the optimal intersection of ideas, culture, institutions, and technology existed to make rapid economic growth achievable. His wide-ranging evidence covers sectors of the British economy often neglected, such as the service industries.|--Publisher description.

Key Papers on Chinese Economic History Up to 1949 PDF

The development of China’s economy has long been an enigma to Western historians. Did it consist of centuries of stagnation followed by a period of collapse or was it a process of steady development, reaching a high point by the eighteenth century? What is certain is that China’s economic growth never developed into a full industrial revolution and China was overtaken by the West, but the reasons for this are highly contested both within and outside China. Topics of the Key Papers here include land use and land ownership, handicraft industries and early industrialization, trade and commerce, transport and communication and taxation and finance. It begins with papers on the earliest development of the economy in the Qin and Han dynasties, but concentrates on the periods of greatest interest and most significant development, namely the commercial revolution of the Song dynasty, the industrial and commercial expansion of the mid-Ming and the impact of Western and Japanese trade and investment in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Economists at War PDF

Wartime is not just about military success. Economists at War tells a different story - about a group of remarkable economists who used their skills to help their countries fight their battles during the Chinese-Japanese War, Second World War, and the Cold War. 1935-55 was a time of conflict, confrontation, and destruction. It was also a time when the skills of economists were called upon to finance the military, to identify economic vulnerabilities, and to help reconstruction. Economists at War: How a Handful of Economists Helped Win and Lose the World Wars focuses on the achievements of seven finance ministers, advisors, and central bankers from Japan, China, Germany, the UK, the USSR, and the US. It is a story of good and bad economic thinking, good and bad policy, and good and bad moral positions. The economists suffered threats, imprisonment, trial, and assassination. They all believed in the power of economics to make a difference, and their contributions had a significant impact on political outcomes and military ends. Economists at War shows the history of this turbulent period through a unique lens. It details the tension between civilian resources and military requirements; the desperate attempts to control economies wracked with inflation, depression, political argument, and fighting; and the clever schemes used to evade sanctions, develop barter trade, and use economic espionage. Politicians and generals cannot win wars if they do not have the resources. This book tells the human stories behind the economics of wartime.

Bernard Salanié studies situations where competitive markets fail to achieve a collective optimum and the interventions used to remedy these so-called market failures. In this book Bernard Salanié studies situations where competitive markets fail to achieve a collective optimum and the interventions used to remedy these so-called market failures. He includes discussions of theories of collective decision making, as well as elementary models of public economics and industrial organization. Although public economics is traditionally defined as the positive and normative study of government action over the economy, Salanié confines himself to microeconomic aspects of welfare economics; he considers taxation and the effects of public spending only as potential remedies for market failures. He concludes with a discussion of the theory of general equilibrium in incomplete markets.

In writing this textbook, Mankiw has tried to put himself in the position of someone seeing economics for the first time. The author's conversational writing style is superb for presenting the politics and science of economic theories to tomorrow's decision-makers. Because Mankiw wrote it for the students, the book stands out among all other principles texts by encouraging students to apply an economic way of thinking in their daily lives. Receiving such a praise as |perhaps the best ever| textbook in economic principles, it's no wonder Mankiw's prize project has quickly become one of the most successful books ever to be published in the college marketplace.

An Introduction to Gender and Wellbeing in Microeconomics explains how to set up the basics of designing a gender-aware approach to microeconomics by constructing creative gender-aware indicators. Using a wellbeing economics framework, the book argues that economic models should take power differences such as those inherent with gender into account, and be complemented by more qualitative analysis geared to discovering the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind the ‘what’ questions. This book will be essential reading for academic and professional researchers, as well as policy researchers in gender and economics, international development, and social and economic policy. It will be invaluable for courses relating gender to the economy, and will enable readers to get a clear and concise understanding of the gendered character of the economy and of economic policy.
